-
monitoring standards of care in services which are purchased and contracted for;
-
providing and funding information and advice services;
-
discharging our responsibility to promote social welfare with particular emphasis on social inclusion; and
-
consulting with users and carers to give them a say how our services are planned and delivered.
Social inclusion A major aim of the Community Plan (2005-8) is to promote social inclusion. We recognise that poverty, discrimination and inequality cause many of the problems experienced by the people we work with. We want to help people overcome these disadvantages and have the opportunity to reach their full potential as citizens.
In the last year, our approach has led to a growing number of disabled people living independent lives in the community with help from supported living providers and access to better day opportunities and supported employment. We have also been active in training staff in fuel poverty issues.
Health improvement
All our services should have a positive impact on people's health, wellbeing and care. We are taking action with our health partners and others to help create healthy communities and to narrow the gap between those who enjoy good health and those who do not. The new Community Health Partnerships will help us to improve partnership working with health and promote stronger public involvement in health improvement.
Supported employment - a service user's story:"Sometimes I look around and can't actually believe it's mine."
These are the words of Jennifer Hutton who has been working in Coatbridge social work area team as a clerical assistant for three years. The following is Jennifer's story:
I moved into my own house in early May 2005 and so far so good, everything was working out fine. My new home in Glenmavis, Airdrie, just five minutes from my parents home, which is good.
Getting my own house is something I had thought about for a while but it was still a surprise when it actually happened.
