Foreword
Welcome to the first Joint Health Improvement Plan for North Lanarkshire. It sets out a wide range of actions designed to keep us well and promote a strong sense of well being in our communities.
We are aware that the health of the people of North Lanarkshire lags behind the Scottish average and many countries in Europe. We also understand that the reasons for this are complex and require partners to tackle issues together. The Joint Health Improvement Plan seeks to provide high quality services for those who need them and take collective action to enable healthy communities to flourish. We intend to narrow the gap between those who enjoy good health and well being and those who do not.
This is a Plan for action over five years. By 2008 we aim to have made significant improvements in the health and well being of the people of North Lanarkshire. To do this we have taken a broad view of the factors that affect health - addressing not just those that can make us ill but focussing on those that keep us well. This means partner agencies working more effectively together to achieve what we all want.
We do not underestimate the challenge ahead of us. This Plan signifies the start of a process of working together across our traditional boundaries for a healthier, more prosperous North Lanarkshire.
