Public Access Strategy - Review & Analysis Introduction

This section introduces the findings of supply, demand, policy and resource audits.  It reviews the Planning Workshop and evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for access in North Lanarkshire, providing a rationale for future action.

  • Whilst the existing supply of paths in North Lanarkshire is good in some places, it varies considerably across the area as a whole.
  • Workshop outputs and questionnaire findings show that there is significant local demand for improving access, and a need to further to stimulate visitor interest in the area.  There is also latent demand for access, particularly in terms of the need to target its development in areas where social exclusion and poor health are concentrated.
  • Policy frameworks generally support access, although many plans and strategies relating to the area stress the need to prioritise actions, and take action through partnership.
  • A range of resources is potentially available to support access from external agencies, although assistance in meeting capital costs and more easily accessed than support for longer term maintenance.

This section of the report sets out the key findings of the review and audit work that was undertaken at the outset of the study.  Together with the outcomes from a stakeholder workshop, these findings form the foundations of the strategy.  The audits are reproduced in full in Appendix 1.
