Public Access Strategy - Action Area Plans Introduction

Action Area Plans are designed to complement the broader aims of the strategy.  Section 6 adds a spatial dimension to aims and sets out action to be taken in each of the defined areas.

Each action area is described in relation to key characteristics, key issues that access should address, a locally defined vision for access, priorities for action and locally specific tools and contacts for implementation.

Priorities within North Lanarkshire as a whole include:

  • Linking access to social exclusion and health in the urban areas, particularly Cumbernauld, Motherwell, Wishaw, Airdrie and Coatbridge, and also in Shotts and Newhouse.  These priorities also link with the development of safer routes to school, work and community facilities.
  • Maintaining routes in the Kilsyth Hills, together with tourism development in the town of Kilsyth.
  • Establishing better links between settlements and with long distance routes in the Northern Corridor area.
  • Making better use of the local road network in more rural areas, particularly in the northern farmland area.  Rural areas also focus on resolving conflict between path users and land managers.

Establishing cross border links from the eastern side of North Lanarkshire, into Falkirk and West Lothian.

This section of the strategy brings together the vision and mechanisms proposed for access in North Lanarkshire, to provide more detailed guidance on how public access should develop in the future.  The Action Area Plans aim to provide a spatial dimension to the aims of the strategy, setting out the key actions which are most important in different parts of the area.  The proposals have been developed as a result of the audit work, and the stakeholder and wider community consultation.
