Action Areas
The action areas have been defined on the basis of the following factors:
- existing demand for paths, and latent demand as identified in the spatial analysis of social and health characteristics in the area;
- the balance and linkages between urban communities and rural areas;
- the nature of land management in the areas;
- existing path provision (both scale and nature of the supply); and
- existing and planning land use and other physical characteristics of the area and settlements.
As a result, and illustrated in Figure 6.1, the following Action Areas have been identified:
- Kilsyth Hills
- Kilsyth and the Kelvin Valley
- Cumbernauld
- Muirhead
- Northern farmland plateau
- Moorland fringes
- Clyde Valley
- Coatbridge, Airdrie, Bellshill, Motherwell and Wishaw
- Southern farmland plateau
- Newmains and Shotts.
The boundaries of action areas are intentionally loosely defined, recognising that the nature of such provision rarely changes abruptly on the ground. More specific areas of action would be defined at a more detailed, local level.

|
Within each of the areas, a series of key themes have been considered based on the Strategys vision, aims and objectives, and also on more detailed analysis of issues and opportunities within the action areas themselves. The table below provides an overview of:
- the relative level of priority which should be attached to each of the themes within each action area (denoted by symbol used);
- prioritisation of the most important themes between action areas (as demarcated by thicker line around key themes).
|
This prioritisation shows that more priority themes exist within Areas C and H. As a result, Cumbernauld, and Coatbridge, Airdrie, Bellshill, Motherwell and Wishaw appear to merit higher priority in the implementation of the strategy as a whole.

Specific recommendations for action based on these themes are proposed for each area. These recommendations are, however, additional to the wider principles that apply to access provision and management throughout North Lanarkshire. The implementation framework has been designed to complement the aims set out here, providing the basis upon which the strategy can be translated into action.
The next section details the following aspects for each of the Action Areas:
- Description / key characteristics
- Key issues
- Action Area Vision
- Priorities for Action
- Implementation.
