Performance Report 2004-2005 Community Safety

Community Safety

Our priorities over the four years of the plan are to:

  • Tackle alcohol misuse
  • Improve trust and develop new ways of encouraging people to report victimisation, and
  • Reduce the number of preventable accidents

To reflect these our actions in Year 2004/ 2005 have included:

  • Restructuring the Community Safety Partnership to better achieve delivery and attainment of targets linked to priorities

Case Study:

The Community Safety Partnership added to the programme of events for young people over the school holiday period by organising a number of new activities for the young people of North Lanarkshire. Mainly in areas of known youth disorder, the activities included classes on Street Dancing/Hip Hop, Cheerleading, Fitness Testing, Tri-golf and Aerojam. These were a resounding success with over 5300 young people participating. Certain offences often associated to young people (such as street drinking) fell by up to 70% when compared to the previous year in the areas where the activities took place. Several new clubs have since been set up ensuring that young people and their communities benefited throughout the year.

  • Development and implementation of a Local Alcohol Strategy to tackle alcohol misuse through Education, Diversion and Enforcement. This has resulted in 63 offences being reported under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976, 21 warnings to licensees, 7 police referrals to the Licensing Board, 2 licence suspensions and 11 licence refusals.
  • In partnership with the Scottish Executive, development of an innovative approach to Domestic Abuse, introduction of a risk assessment to identify potential high risk offenders and the provision of legal services for victims.
  • Introduction of 3rd party reporting mechanisms through partnership with the voluntary sector
  • Introduction of Community Warden schemes in Airdrie, Coatbridge and Bellshill
  • Suitable premises identified for centralised monitoring of CCTV systems across North Lanarkshire
  • Introduction of mobile CCTV cameras on a pilot basis to determine feasibility
  • Home safety and security audits carried out in 4594 residences occupied by vulnerable persons, with 4375 installations carried out

Case Study:

Nine Safer Seniors Roadshows took place throughout North Lanarkshire the last year. Funded by the Community Safety Partnership and supported by Scottish Power, over 600 people benefited from the events. The Roadshows aimed to empower elderly residents within our communities with the information and skills to make informed decisions that would impact positively upon their everyday lives.

They consisted of a series of interactive workshops and a drama presentation performed by local community police officers, with over 90% of those attending finding the Roadshows to be informative and interesting. There was a wide range of topics covered including issues such as Bogus Callers, Road Safety, and Food Hygiene.

  • Twenty's Plenty schemes implemented at over 1000 locations
