Local Agenda 21 Why do we need sustainability ?

Quite simply, because we are using up the things the earth provides far faster than natural processes can replenish them. Our global economic systems over-exploits natural resources, failing to pay true cost of their value and for dealing with the waste and pollution generated.

At the same time, the social and economic gap between the rich and the poor widens, and problems associated with health, famine and poverty and social injustices continue to spread. In North Lanarkshire, inequalities between and within some communities diminish the lives of those who live in them.

However it is not all bad news. We possess the knowledge and technical ability to resolve most of these problems. But we need the will to do so. Starting at the local level with Sustainability Strategies like Community Planning and Local Agenda 21 is an important part of the solution. Local action in support of sustainability affects the places where we all live and therefore it makes sense to promote and support the Council and it's partners sustainability initiatives.
