Local Agenda 21 What is Sustainable Development

Sustainable development aims to provide a better quality of life for everyone, both now and for generations to come. In essence it is about the wise use of our economic, human and natural resources. The most common definition of sustainable development is that coined by the Prime Minister of Norway, Mrs Gro Harlem Brundtland, at the World Commission on Enviroment and Development, which is Sustainable Development Circles

"Development that meets present needs without damaging the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"

Reflecting these sentiments, the current UK Government definition of sustainable development, taken from it's Strategy (Towards a Better Quality of Life) is:

  • Social progress which recognises the needs of everyone;
  • Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic development and employment;
  • Effective protection of the environment; and
  • Prudent use of natural resources;

…while considering the long term implications of decisions. Crucially the Government Strategy notes that it is only through the integrated delivery of these aims that sustainable development will be realised.
