Local Agenda 21 Monitoring for Sustainability

If it the intention of the Local Agenda 21 Strategy to develop a more sustainable community then we need to be able to monitor progress on how we are doing. Accordingly a set of indicators have been established to provide a framework for monitoring how these strategies are achieving change. This monitoring framework comprises Key Headline Indicators that cover everyday concerns including the economy, level of crime, energy conservation, education and health. The Key Indicators reflect the three key areas of Sustainable Development and are listed below. Fuller details are available at Appendix 1

The Key Indicators are:-

A Prosperous Economy

  • Gross Domestic Product per Head
  • Average Weekly Earnings
  • Employment in full and part-time jobs
  • Self Employed
  • Percentage unemployed, relative to Scotland
  • Educational attainment (Standard Grade)

An Inclusive Society

  • Percentage of Households on Housing Benefit/CTB
  • Adults aged 18+ on Income Support
  • Elderly on Income Support
  • Percentage of children receiving free scholl meals
  • Percentage of children under 16 living in households receiving Income Support
  • Health
    • To reduce the number of young people smoking (12-15 years)
    • To reduce the number of women smoking during pregnancy
    • Increase Percentage of adult population eating 5 portions fruit/vegatbles per day
    • Increase in percentage of mothers breastfeeding at 6 weeks
    • Reduce excess drinking:
    • Men – 21 units/week'
    • Women – 14 units/week
    • Increase median age before the onset of cronary heart disease
    • Increase median age of death from CHD
    • Increase median age of death from cancer
  • Housing
    • Dampness in Housing
    • Reduce re-let turnover in social rented sector
  • Community Safety
    • Road safety
    • Reported Crime
  • Civic Participation
    • Voting in Elections
    • Volunteering

  • Climate Change
    • HECA Measures
  • Transport

    • Area of protected wildlife habitat (SSSI's, SINC's, etc)
