Welcome to North Lanarkshire's first Cultural Strategy.
This strategy is for everyone in North Lanarkshire and highlights the importance cultural activity plays in enriching our everyday lives.
But what do we mean by culture? It is a very difficult term to define and means different things to different people but we have taken it to mean the way we lived in the past, our traditions and how we want to live in the future. Our view of cultural activity is very broad and takes into account new cultural experiences and influences. We have included in the strategy ethnic identities, heritage and the arts, education and learning, natural and manmade landscapes, sport and leisure.
The strategy sets out a way forward for the future – to ensure that our culture thrives and fulfils its potential to challenge, inspire and educate us, and to develop cultural provision in North Lanarkshire which is accessible to everyone.
Through its four themes:
- increase quality, accessibility, participation and learning,
- celebrate cultural diversity and value cultural heritage,
- encourage and promote regeneration
- celebrate achievement
the strategy and accompanying action plan will assist us in delivering the priorities outlined in our Community Plan and in North Lanarkshire Council's Corporate Plan.
