North Lanarkshire Partnership - What is it?

The North Lanarkshire Partnership (NLP) was established in 1997 in recognition of the complex and inter-related nature of the issues affecting the area of North Lanarkshire. Its economic, social and environmental problems cannot be solved by a single agency, and a multi-agency approach was therefore needed which is driven by shared strategic objectives, and which can ensure that a linked series of actions are undertaken by the key players.

North Lanarkshire Council plays a key role in the NLP, which also includes the Voluntary Sector and the major public sector agencies of Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire, Communities Scotland, Jobcentre Plus, Strathclyde Police, NHS Lanarkshire, the Fire Brigade and the Further Education Colleges. A Board oversees the activities of the NLP, formed by senior representatives from each organisation. The members of the NLP renewed their commitment to partnership working by signing a new Partnership Agreement in June 2004. This identified the shared strategic objectives on which this co-operation is based. The remit of the NLP is:

  • to act as forum through which strategic economic, social and environmental issues affecting the area will be addressed in an integrated way, and in particular to develop North Lanarkshire's Community Planning process;

  • to co-ordinate Partner agencies activity in the pursuance of agreed joint strategic objectives;

  • to approve joint action plans which identify agreed priorities, and which set out the more detailed implementation arrangements of partnership activity;

  • to agree targets against which progress can be monitored;

  • to provide a mechanism for debating issues of Partners concern; and

  • to provide a North Lanarkshire level strategic link with pan-Lanarkshire organisations and alliances.
