Young people encouraged to apply for travel scheme

Young people in North Lanarkshire can benefit from a national scheme giving them cheaper travel on buses, trains and ferries.

The new Concessionary Travel Scheme offers 16 to 18 year olds a card that they can use to obtain discounts on public transport across Scotland, as well as discounts and benefits on a range of activities including shopping, eating out and going to the cinema.

To get a National Entitlement Card, young people in North Lanarkshire can pick up an application form in any of the council's First Stop Shops and libraries or call our customer contact centre on 01698 403280.

The travel scheme will give all 16 to 18 year olds a third off single bus fares and a free rail card entitling them to a third off rail travel. In addition, young people who live on any of the Scottish islands will receive two free return journeys to the mainland each year. The benefits of the scheme also apply to full-time volunteers up to the age of 25 who are actively contributing to their community.

Councillor Jim McCabe, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said:

"The Concessionary Travel Scheme gives young people real savings on travel throughout Scotland. So if they are going to and from school, college, university or work or travelling in the evenings or at weekends they will receive a significant reduction on the cost of their fares. We want all 16 to 18 year-olds to benefit from this initiative, so I would encourage young people in North Lanarkshire to apply for their National Entitlement Card.

"It's easy – and free – to get a card and start getting cheaper travel. Just call in to one of the council's 12 First Stop Shops or any of our libraries for an application form or phone our customer contact centre, then our staff will be able to validate the completed forms. With the new card, young people will be able to travel the length and breadth of Scotland much more cheaply as well as enjoying discounts and offers in shops, restaurants and leisure facilities."

Young people in North Lanarkshire who are already registered with the national Young Scot scheme through the council's Dialogue Youth initiative will have received a letter from the council giving details of the concessionary travel scheme and how to apply. The National Entitlement Card offers all the benefits of the existing national Young Scot scheme as well as the discounted travel.

Application forms for the scheme are available:

  • in the council's First Stop Shops and libraries
  • by telephoning the council's customer contact centre on 01698 403280, or

Young people should then complete the application form and take it, along with the appropriate documents, to one of North Lanarkshire Council's First Stop Shops or libraries where staff will validate the application and send it off to be processed. A National Entitlement Card and separate bus pass will then be posted to the young person within 21 days.
