Over £8.5 million have been generated for local people through the work of North Lanarkshire Council’s welfare rights service.
The service gives advice on eligibility for benefits and practical help on applying for the appropriate benefits to ensure individuals and families maximise their income. Staff can also assist with representation at appeals tribunals and can act on an individuals’ behalf to resolve disputes over bills and other financial issues.
In the year from April 2005, welfare rights staff helped boost the income of many households by a total of £8.5 million of benefits.
Councillor Harry McGuigan, Convener of the Social Work Committee, said:
"Many people do not apply for all the benefits they are entitled to because they are not aware of what is available or they are put off by the forms to be completed. In addition, if people don’t fill in the applications correctly, they may be receiving less than they should. The benefits system is complicated and it can be difficult to work out what and how you can claim.
"That’s where our welfare rights staff can help. They are fully trained in all aspects of the benefits system and can offer help and advice to make sure people claim the full amount they are due.
"This practical assistance has made a huge difference to the quality of life of so many individuals and families, and the welfare rights service is one of a range of measures by the council to tackle poverty in our communities."
