£8.6 million for Broadwood sport and leisure facility

Cumbernauld will be home to a new £8.6 million state-of-the-art community sport and leisure facility in just two years, councillors heard today (Tuesday), as an update on expansion plans for the town's Broadwood Stadium was presented to North Lanarkshire Council's Community Services Committee.

The Broadwood development will create a new landmark on the Cumbernauld landscape, creating an eye-catching sport and leisure building (which is expected to incorporate a conditioning gym, dance studios, sports hall, martial arts studio, kids zone, changing facilities, café, office and reception facilities), two additional seven-a-side synthetic pitches and an outdoor play area.

While the design details have yet to be finalised, the overall aim is to complement the current 8,000 seat stadium complex at Broadwood to create a major sport and leisure venue that will serve the people of Cumbernauld and beyond.

The project will be jointly funded by North Lanarkshire Council and Walker Group and will be designed to maximise the development's energy efficiency, meeting the council's commitment to sustainability.

"This fantastic project will deliver real benefits for both the Cumbernauld and North Lanarkshire areas", said Councillor Jim Logue, Convener of the Community Services Committee and Chair of Broadwood Stadium (Cumbernauld) Ltd, "and realise our ambition of delivering a major capital project that will increase and improve the provision of sport and leisure facilities in the northern part of our area.

"Improving the health and fitness of our residents is a key priority for this council and the new development at Broadwood will ensure all members of our communities can participate in a wide range of sporting activities in a first-class environment.

"The new Broadwood development will be a major force in sport and leisure in North Lanarkshire and I look forward to the project progressing over the coming weeks and months."

Local elected member, Councillor Barry McCulloch added: "State-of-the-art facilities that can be enjoyed by all are what this development is all about and I'm sure the new and improved Broadwood will be a huge hit with local people when it opens. I am delighted that such a major construction programme will be taking place in this area and I'm sure it will be enjoyed by many."

Construction on the new Broadwood community sport and leisure facility is expected to get underway in February 2008, once the detailed design and the tender process is complete. The new facility is expected to open in spring 2009.
