The future's bright, the future's Broadwood!

An open invitation is being extended to residents in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth areas to come along and see the future of Broadwood Stadium, which is on its marks for a major expansion project.

Cumbernauld will be home to a new state-of-the-art community sport and leisure facility at Broadwood that will create a new landmark on the local landscape and an open evening has been organised at Broadwood Stadium on Wednesday 13 February 2008 to let locals know all about it.

The open evening will be held in the stadium's Clyde Suite at 7pm and those in attendance will hear from representatives from North Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, Broadwood Stadium (Cumbernauld) Limited and JM architects, who designed the new facility.

The expansion will be centred around an eye-catching sport and leisure building that will incorporate a conditioning gym, dance studios, sports hall, martial arts studio, kids zone, changing facilities, cafe, office, reception facilities and two additional seven a-side synthetic pitches and artists' impressions of these new facilities will be on display. Combined with the current 8,000 seat stadium complex at Broadwood, this will create a major sport and leisure venue – at an easily accessible prime location – that will serve the people of Cumbernauld and beyond.

The £7.2 million project will be funded by North Lanarkshire Council and will be designed to enhance the development's energy efficiency – for example, by maximising the use of daylight and efficient lighting – which will help deliver on the council's commitments to sustainability.

Lizanne McMurrich, North Lanarkshire Council's Head of Community Information and Learning, said: "The development of Broadwood Stadium is a major project for the North Lanarkshire area and it is important that residents – particularly those local to the stadium – are fully informed about what is going and what will be delivered for local communities in this area, so I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the open evening on 13 February.

"This is your chance to hear first-hand about these plans and the bright future we envision for Broadwood and Cumbernauld."

Construction on the new Broadwood community sport and leisure facility is expected to get underway in April 2008 and the new facility is expected to open in spring 2009.

If you are unable to attend the open evening, further information can be obtained from Broadwood Stadium, 1 Ardgoil Drive, Broadwood, Cumbernauld, G68 9NE, by telephoning 01236 451351 or by e-mailing broadwood@northlan.gov.uk.
