North Lanarkshire's Provost, Councillor Tom Curley, urged residents in the Cumbernauld area to get on their starting blocks today (Friday 7 March) at the launch of this year's Cumbernauld 10k, which takes place on Sunday 14 September.
Provost Curley was at the town's Broadwood Stadium – the venue for the event – where he also announced that this terrific event, which was first organised in 2007 as part of the Cumbernauld 50 celebrations, will now become an annual fixture on the town's calendar.
The 10k is organised by North Lanarkshire Council, in partnership with Campsies Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd, NHS Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd. This year's event will be supported by Strathmore Spring Water (produced by A.G Barr), the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and, for the first time, media sponsor – the Cumbernauld News.
Launching the 2008 10k, Provost Curley said: "Cumbernauld is a terrific town and the success of the inaugural 10k was so overwhelming that we were fully committed to doing it all over again. I am absolutely thrilled that not only will there be a 2008 10k, but there will be one every year.
"The 10k not only provides the opportunity to take part in a fun, social and healthy event – it also raised an incredible amount of money for charity last year and this is something very close to my heart.
"I'm sure the people of Cumbernauld will ensure the 2008 10k is bigger and better than last year, and I would urge everyone to get involved and reap the benefits of participation."
Councillor McElroy, Chair of Campsies Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd, said: "Last year's event – with around 400 runners plus 180 kids for the 1k races – showed just how much support there is within Cumbernauld for the 10k. I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to get on board again for 2008. This is an event in Cumbernauld for Cumbernauld and I'm sure local residents will be just as enthusiastic as last year."
Councillor Jim Logue, Chair of North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, added: "The Cumbernauld 10k is a terrific event that encourages more people to get more active, more often and we are delighted to be working with our partners again to ensure this year's event is a success."
Alister Blyth, Editor of the Cumbernauld News, said: "It's really good news for Cumbernauld that the 10k will now be an annual event – this will help put Cumbernauld firmly on the map and raise the profile of the town.
"The 10k is a great event for our very own home-grown fun runners and serious athletes both home and abroad. It will be a fun event for all and I hope as many people as possible get involved."
Geraldine Queen, General Manager (North Locality) NHS Lanarkshire, added: "NHS Lanarkshire is committed to supporting the local population to improve their health and this event is the ideal opportunity for people to get fit."
Adrian Troy, Head of Marketing at A G Barr, said: "It has always been important for us to play an active role in the communities in which we are based, so we are delighted to continue our support of the Cumbernauld 10k by supplying Strathmore Spring Water once again for this year's race.
"Strathmore Spring Water is supporting a number of sporting events in 2008 with the provision of water and we would encourage people to include exercise as part of their regular routine. It is also important to stay hydrated when exercising and we're pleased to be helping the participants in Cumbernauld enjoy what we are sure will be a phenomenal running experience."
Clare Cogan Turner, Fundraising Officer with Scottish Spina Bifida Association, said: "We are thrilled that we have been chosen as the charity partner for the 2008 Cumbernauld 10k and I look forward to working with everyone involved throughout the year."
