Cumbernauld book is the best in ages

As Cumbernauld's fiftieth anniversary year draws to a close, North Lanarkshire Council, with support from Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd and the Heritage Lottery Fund, has launched a specially-commissioned book that explores the town's rich and diverse history.

'Cumbernauld through the ages' has been written by John Mackenzie, a former NLC archivist who came up with the idea after realising how much information existed about the history of Cumbernauld.

"The ideas for this publication were based largely on information discovered during my employment as an archivist for North Lanarkshire Council from 2001 until 2003," he said. "This book covers everything from the Roman occupation to the present day.

"It would not be possible to condense the entire history of the town into the pages of this publication – rather it is intended to give an overview of the development of the area from earliest times and to promote and encourage further study. Cumbernauld has a long and varied history – and one that is fascinating to explore."

John's meticulously-researched information is accompanied by an extensive range of photography from North Lanarkshire Council's Lenziemill Archives Centre, the National Library of Scotland and private sources.

In addition to chapters on the town's ancient history, the book also exaimes the early development of the village and estate of Cumbernauld, the development of nineteenth century road and rail links, its role sheltering evacuees in World War II and the birth and evolution of the new town.

Jointly funded by North Lanarkshire Council, Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd and the Heritage Lottery Fund, 'Cumbernauld through the ages' represents not only a celebration of the town's Golden anniversary, but a tribute that will last well into the future.

"This book marks a significant landmark in Cumbernauld's history," said Councillor Gerry McElroy, Chair of Campsies Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd. "The images, articles and memories of times gone by paint a vivid picture of the town's development. I'm sure readers will enjoy reflecting on Cumbernauld's past achievements, and looking forward to those that are still to come."

Cumbernauld Through the Ages' was officially launched last week (Wednesday 5 December), and will now be circulated to all local public, school and college libraries.  Free copies will also be available from local libraries and from North Lanarkshire Council Archives at 10 Kelvin Road, Lenziemill Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld, Tel: 01236 638980.
