Pupils at Aitkenhead Primary in Uddingston got a real Christmas surprise yesterday morning (Tuesday) when a very special guest dropped in for a special performance of the school's Christmas show.
But it wasn't the man in the red suit who was guest of honour – instead Real Radio breakfast show host Robin Galloway paid a visit to the North Lanarkshire school, which has incorporated some of the station's breakfast show personalities into its Christmas script.
Written by head teacher Elaine Coyle and teachers Anne Carroll and Sheila Paterson, the school's show is based around a Real Radio breakfast show, with pupils playing the parts of Robin, fellow host Cat Harvey and some of the shows most-loved characters such as Old Mrs G – who takes part in the Real Radio Wind-Up – and the Real Radio Renegade, the most wanted man in Scotland!
Elaine Coyle said: "Our Christmas show is always fun and this year we wanted to find a different way to link all our Christmas songs and we thought the Real Radio link would be ideal. We know that a lot of the kids and staff hear the breakfast show in the morning and recognise the characters we featured in our performance.
"We were delighted when Real Radio agreed to our plans and the kids have loved taking on these roles. It's been great to see the enthusiasm from everyone involved and the show has proved to be a hit with everyone who has seen it.
"Everyone is thrilled that Robin has taken the time – and on his birthday as well! – to come along and see the show and meet the kids who are, I'm sure, stars in the making and real winners of the future!"
Robin and Cat breakfast show hosts for Real Radio said: "What a quirky idea for a school play. We are delighted that Aitkenhead Primary has chosen Real Radio to base their play around with some favourite characters from the show including Old Mrs G and the Real Radio Renegade."
Robin continued: "I couldn’t wait to surprise the kids when they were performing. I was hoping that the pupils who played me wouldn’t be too good to steal my on-air show!"
Emma Bateman (11) who plays Cat, said: "It was really fun to play Cat because when I listen to her in the morning she sounds fun. It was great to meet Robin also."
Ashley Smith (11) who plays Robin, said: "It was a great experience to play the character of Robin and a bit spooky to meet him for real! I've really enjoyed it and can't believe I've got to know him."
Tillyarna Bow (11) who plays old Mrs G said: "I loved playing my character – it was really fun. I loved my costume and it was a big surprise to meet Robin Galloway!"
