Provost's Introduction
As Provost of North Lanarkshire, I extend a warm welcome to our new guide, 'Now Look Closer'.
Having lived in North Lanarkshire all my life, I'm very proud of this area and I'm delighted to have this opportunity to showcase its greatest assets in this new publication.
Based in the heart of Scotland, North Lanarkshire has a population of around 321,000 and covers one of the largest unitary authority areas in the country, with a total land area of more than 47,648 hectares.
The central location, excellent transport links and natural scenic beauty ensure that the area is popular, both as an ideal location to set up home or business, or as a centre for the casual visitor or touring holidaymaker.
My role as Provost involves me travelling widely across North Lanarkshire. I'm always inspired by its many contrasts – from beautiful hills, breathtaking scenery and the serenity of our canals and rivers, to the bustling town centres, superb visitor attractions and blend of old and new industries.
The guide is split into different sections and provides information on places to explore, the great outdoors, where to go for fun and leisure activities, where to stop off to rest, and advice for businesses. The helpful 'At a Glance' centre section provides a condensed version of the guide's contents and contains a useful map to help you plan your route and reach your destination easily.
Whether you are a visitor to the area, a new resident, a new employee or already live here, I'm sure you'll find this guide interesting. I hope it will provide you with some new ideas for places to see or new activities to try.
