There are currently 132,620 households in North Lanarkshire and 44% of these have one of more cars, according to the 2001 Census. That equates to a minimum of 58,353 cars, each driving to and from their destination daily in North Lanarkshire.
There are 321,100 people living in these households according to the June 2001 Mid Year Estimates, GRO (Scotland) 2001. Do you walk or cycle to work, college or school? Unfortunately there are no statistics for this question, but a reasonable guess would be that a minimum of 1 in 10 do so on a regular basis.
That means a lot of traffic on the roads of North Lanarkshire and very few using alternative modes of transport. |
On the healthier side (but still statistical), the Council's 15 main Sports Facilities had a total of 2,567,177 users during 2001/02, so there are lots of people who are willing to pay to keep fit!
