Road Safety Education & Training - Organisations

Youth Organisations

The large number of youth organisations offer considerable possibilities for Road Safety Education and Training. A number of the uniformed organisations have Road Safety badges or include Road Safety as part of a general accident prevention badge. A special pack has been produced containing guidance and help for leaders to assist young people doing Road Safety badge work.

Other resources on cycling and pedestrian safety are available and inter company quizzes and competitions are encouraged. Prizes can be made available for these activities.

Adult Organisations

Consideration can be given to giving an illustrated talk on the work carried out by the Road Safety staff or on some other topical aspect of Road Safety. Support from adult organisations is welcome in the form of sponsorship, which may assist in the launch of a local project for children.

Horse Riding

Over the last number of years horse and pony riding has become more popular. Estimates suggest that there are over 3 million horse riders in Britain resulting in over 3,000 traffic related accidents each year.

Very few people ride on the road by choice, but for many there is little choice as they move from one off road area to another. Riding a horse on the road is not an easy task and it is important that riders seek proper training to enable them to cope with the ever increasing volume of traffic on the road. To this end the British Horse Society has designed a Riding and Road Safety Test. In North Lanarkshire there are a few centres where training is available and tests organised. These tests are organised by the British Horse Society with Road Safety staff providing equipment and acting as joint examiners.

Dog Training

The number of road crashes caused by or involving dogs is not recorded. However many drivers have been involved in some type of incident involving a dog. It was over 40 years ago in Lanarkshire that the first formal system for road safety dog training in Scotland was set up. At the present time in North Lanarkshire there are a number of centres where training is offered. This training is graded from basic obedience work to advanced exercises. Both outdoor and indoor training is available. Certificates are awarded and the Clubs operate a league table of passes administered by the Lanarkshire Dog Training Club Council.
