Road Safety - What's Being Done About It?

Road Safety activities can be grouped under 4 main headings termed the 4 Es.

  • Engineering
  • Enforcement
  • Education Training And Publicity
  • Encouragement

Engineering

Road Safety engineering covers many aspects, however in general it is considered to be the attempt to create a road environment that is safer for all road users, protecting both occupants of vehicles and other vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.

Enforcement

Enforcement of the Road Traffic Law is carried out by the police. Specially trained officers in the Traffic Dept. have a particular interest in Road Safety, and are increasingly aided in their work by new technology to encourage compliance with the law and to detect offenders.

Education, Training And Publicity

95% of all road crashes involve some form of human error and in 76% of crashes road user error is solely to blame. It is important therefore that a comprehensive programme of road safety education is directed at all age groups and class of road user. Children and teenagers are particularly included in these programmes.

Encouragement

Road Safety is an issue for everyone, and while both national and local government and a number of other agencies are involved, each individual person must accept responsibility for themselves and other road users. Local communities and those in a position of influence should also be aware of the contribution that they can make, particularly in relation to the safety of our children. Information and support is provided on all aspects of Road Safety for anyone wishing to teach or provide a programme of Road Safety.
