Residential Parking Options : Council Tenants - Application to Erect a Garage
Council housing tenants may apply to erect a garage in their own garden and should complete an application for Alterations and Improvements. The following general guidelines apply:
All garage types:
Garages should be sited level with or behind the building lines.
The proposed site must be deemed suitable by your local housing office.
A suitable material such as monoblock, concrete, tarmac or slabs should be laid from the footpath to the garage.
Double gates should be erected at the opening in the front fence and must not open onto the footpath.
Any necessary planning permission, building warrant should be obtained.
Permission to lower the kerb should be obtained.
Timber garages should be a minimum of:
2 metres from the house; and
0.5 metres from any boundary fence.
Non timber garages should be:
a minimum of:
1 metre away from the house
1 metre away from the house
0.5 metres from any boundary fencing; and
finished with roughcast to match the finish on adjacent houses.

Residents living in ex-council housing will also have to apply for planning permission from their local planning office to erect a garage within the curtilage of their garden area. The above general guidelines will also apply for this.
