Public Health Complaints

The Environmental Health Section investigates complaints about alleged statutory nuisance, typically enquiries concerning : -

  • Drainage issues resulting in discharge of sewage or waste water (not surface water);
  • House condition problems such as water penetration resulting in structural dampness;
  • Damaged areas of fencing of closed quarries allowing unauthorised access;
  • Accumulations of refuse that could provide harbourage for rodents;
  • Smells emanating from commercial premises.

Please note that complaints relating to Council housing should, in the first instance, be made direct to the local office of  Housing and Property Services.

On finding a statutory nuisance, we will take appropriate action to resolve the matter. These enquiries are often resolved informally, but in rare cases the Council may serve notice on the appropriate person requiring abatement of the statutory nuisance.

  • Legislation defines matters which may constitute a 'statutory nuisance.' These are generally matters which may be prejudicial to health or a nuisance.
  • Prejudicial to health is defined as injurious or likely to cause injury to health.
