When waste is deposited in a landfill site it begins to break down due to the action of bacteria and chemicals both within the waste and in the environment. As a result of the waste breaking down Carbon Dioxide and Methane gases are produced. Methane is flammable and can be explosive above certain concentrations. Carbon Dioxide can cause suffocation at sufficiently high concentrations
Officers from the Council's Pollution Control Section regularly monitor closed landfill sites within the North Lanarkshire area to record levels of these gases that are being produced by each individual site.
The information obtained is also used in the planning process, to ensure the safety of any buildings and their occupants, whenever a development is proposed on land near to a closed landfill site.
