Welcome to the homepage of the Motherwell Fairtrade steering group.
About us
In June 2004, councillors and officers from North Lanarkshire Council, Motherwell residents, representatives of Motherwell based organisations such as the Soroptimists International and Christian Aid, Motherwell College staff and students and young people and staff from local schools joined together to set up the Motherwell Fairtrade steering group.
The aim of the group was to achieve Fairtrade status for the Motherwell area.
Following lots of hard work by group members including coffee mornings, awareness raising events and canvassing local shops, restaurants, cafes and businesses, we achieved Fairtrade zone status 16 January 2007. The zone includes Motherwell, Carfin, Cleland, Newarthill, New Stevenston and Holytown.
Our mission
On the back of our achieving Fairtrade status, we will continue to work on increasing the profile of Fairtrade in the zone and encouraging more businesses, workplaces, schools and shops to use or provide Fairtrade goods. We will also work to maintain our status as a Fairtrade zone and we will also help communities in other towns in North Lanarkshire to set up their own Fairtrade campaigns.
