The Marriage (Scotland) Act 2002 gives couples the opportunity to have a civil marriage ceremony at any place approved by the local authority. The Marriage (Approval of Places)(Scotland) Regulations 2002 put in place the procedures for an approval.
There are two types of approval. One is called a Period Approval and lasts for a fixed period of time and, generally, is applied for by the owner or operator of a venue where civil marriages might be conducted on a fairly regular basis e.g. a hotel. The other is a Temporary Approval for one specified civil marriage ceremony and the applicant must be one of the parties to the marriage. That can be at any suitable site e.g. a house, a marquee, a boat.
Every venue must maintain the solemnity and dignity of civil marriage and must not have any connection (recent or otherwise) with religion or religious practice.
North Lanarkshire Council has granted Period Approvals to the owners/operators of the premises detailed below. Any couple considering a civil marriage should, in the first instance, contact the registrar for the registration District in which they wish to marry.
