  3. Yes, we have a partnership arrangement with Dignity Caring Funerals Ltd who operate the Holytown crematorium.

  7. Cemetery administration staff will be happy to assist with lair searches. Please note that there may be difficulty finding a lair if there is limited information available upon which to base a search.

  8. Plans may be available to view at the cemetery administration office. A print of a local plan showing particular lairs may be available.

  9. Burials are normally arranged by contacting a Funeral Director. However, burials can also be arranged independently by contacting the cemetery administration office.

  10. We have a policy of no pre-sales of lairs. A lair is purchased at the time of arranging a burial.

  11. No. The holder purchased the exclusive right to burial only.

  12. The lair holder may wish to sell back the lair to us at the purchase price. Under the terms of the Management Rules we may, after a period of 40 years, failing interment in or transfer of, forfeit the right of burial therein.

  13. This is a personal preference and entirely up to the family or lair holder. There is no legal requirement on this matter.

  14. We operate a memorial masons registration scheme. Only registered masons may work within our cemeteries and churchyards. Lair holders are required to appoint a registered mason to work on their behalf. We will issue a memorial permit to erect, repair or renovate memorials. There is a charge for an application for a permit. There will also be a charge for the re-erecting of any memorial that requires a foundation.

  16. The lair holder is responsible for the memorial. We are responsible for the maintenance and safety of the cemetery or churchyard under the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974.

  17. We have to approve inscriptions prior to issuing a permit. Please note some wording will not be allowed.

  18. You cannot use anything, memorials must be constructed of natural stone or tarrazzo. Generally wood, plastic, glass, etc is discouraged.

  20. Yes, there is a non-resident fee for new lairs and interments. There is also a surcharge for Public Holidays and outwith normal working hours.

  21. Yes. Up to 6 cremation caskets can be interred in a full lair.

  22. No. Ashes can damage the lawn area and may cause distress to other cemetery users.

  23. Floral tributes or wreaths remain on a lair for a period of 14 days.

  25. Yes. A limited area at the head of the lair can be used but there are limits on the materials that can be used and no concrete or permanent fixings can be used.

  26. Yes, donated seating may be permissible in certain areas within a cemetery. Permission must be sought from the Cemetery Manager.

  27. We are at present considering how best to provide suitable baby sections within some cemeteries. There is an area in Cambusnethan Cemetery allocated to Muslim burials. We are willing to work with all religious groups to accomodate their burial requirements.

  30. Complaints can be made by contacting the cemetery administration office or by completing the on-line complaints form.

  31. This is due to the soil consolidating and compacting again after the interment. We level lairs approximately 2 weeks and 8 weeks after the initial interment. After this period, lairs are levelled as part of the grounds maintenance specification.

  32. No, unfortunately no pets are allowed to be interred within our cemeteries or churchyards.

  36. In normal circumstances it would be expected that a plot could accommodate 4 coffins and up to 6 cremation caskets, however, this may decrease due to ground conditions, etc.

  38. Yes, lairs can be transferred but this must be done using our procedures and in a manner that is legally binding. Lairs cannot be transferred by any other means.

  39. We are required by law to ensure that the cemeteries and churchyards are safe places to work and visit.

  40. Memorials are inspected by trained staff. Should a memorial be a category 1 danger, then it is required to be made safe immediately under law. We have agreed that the cemeteries service will temporarily fence, support or lay flat memorials, they also sheugh (ditch in) memorials. These procedures are accepted by the Health and Safety Executive and are in line with memorial management guidelines. Lair holders are reminded that responsibility for maintaining memorials lies with them.

  41. We will continue to inspect memorials and shall sheugh (ditch in) or lay flat memorials which have not had any repair or remedial work carried out.

  43. A category 1 memorial requires to be made safe immediately. Once this has been done we endeavour to contact the last known registered lair holder, this may not always be possible as many lairs have not been transferred or holders have moved away from the original address given, without informing us.

    • Category 1 memorial is dangerous and requires to be made safe immediately.
    • Category 2 memorial requires to be re-inspected within 6 months to one year.
    • Category 3 memorial requires to be re-inspected in 5 years.

  44. Yes. Our cemeteries memorial team record all details both manually and electronically. A copy of these reports can be obtained by contacting the cemetery administration office. There may be a charge for this service.

  45. Only one memorial or headstone will be permitted at the head of the grave, you may also place two flower vases in the space provided at the head of the lair, i.e. the crown head or on the base of the memorial. We do not accept any responsbiility for any loss or damage to such vases.
