Walking : Where Can I Walk?

Walking is one of the safest physical activities - there is very little risk of injury and it doesn't hurt.

Led Walks

You may be worried about walking alone. Led walks are a good alternative.  These are led by trained walk leaders who can provide useful information and advice.  Most walks have a leader at the front and one at the back so you don't have to worry about getting left behind - this is helpful for those who have recently been unwell or who are not sure how far they can walk.  Walk leaders can tell you how fast you should walk to get the most benefit.

Led walks provide a chance to meet new people from your neighbourhood and make new friends.  You can't get lost and there is no charge.  Visit Paths for All - Walking Schemes in North Lanarkshire for more information.

Independent Walking

However, walking in groups is not for everyone. Perhaps you want to walk on your own or with a few friends and family and need reassurance and information.

"Walking for Health" schemes in many parts of the country have produced packs containing clear details about local walks and easy-to-follow maps. They give information about routes that:

  • are pleasant, attractive places to walk.
  • are graded to show the level of difficulty.
  • are short and circular
  • avoid crossing busy roads wherever possible.

Norh Lanarkshire Council have developed a network of Recommended Routes for use by walkers.

Below is a list of other popular locations for a 'traffic free' walk.
