Walk and Cycle Route - National Cycle Route 75

North Lanarkshire Council, in conjunction with Sustrans, have installed the Edinburgh to Glasgow Cycle Route (NCN 75).

This route joins the Cylde Coast and Glasgow to Edinburgh and provides links to Loch Lommond.

It follows dismantled railways and riverside and canal tow paths, connecting urban areas to the countryside. Most of the route has easy gradients. You can do short sections by joining the path at different points or even do the whole route if you are feeling energetic.

From Bells Bridge in the centre of Glasgow the route follows the River Clyde as far as Uddingston where it crosses under the M74 and enters North Lanarkshire. It then heads towards Coatbridge and Airdrie. The Airdrie to Bathgate railway path is the central section of the route, following the line of the dismantled railway. Striking sculptures, including a hugh Bedrock Bike and two recycled Calor Gas Fishermen, can be found along the route. There are proposals to reinstate this line, however the NCN 75 will be re-build as part of this works.

From Airdrie the route heads towards Plains and Caldercruix Community Parks. With play parks and pleasant paths they are great places for family outings. After Caldercruix the route follows the southern shore of Hillend Reservoir, before heading towards Bathgate and Edinburgh.

The NCN 75 route has split responsibility in terms of maintenance, due to the various owners of different sections along the route.

However, the Council should be the first point of contact for any comments. These should be directed to the Council for co-ordination of any work on the route.

The route is detailed on the SMARTways Map, however North Lanarkshire has also produced a SMARTways NCN 75 Route Map. These maps are available at various locations along the route.

Sustrans are actively seeking Voluntary Rangers to act as the 'eyes and ears' for Sustrans. Can you help?
