Work began on the Forth & Clyde Canal in 1768, finishing in 1790. |

The waterway was extended through the addition of the Union Canal at Camelon in 1822. For nearly two centuries the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals formed an important commercial transport corridor across central Scotland. But by the 1960s new roads blocked the waterway in nearly 30 places and in 1963 Parliament closed the Canal to navigation.
Thanks to the Millennium Link Project, the biggest canal restoration ever undertaken, coast to coast navigation along the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals has been restored.
You can access the Canal in North Lanarkshire at Auchinstarry, Craigmarloch and Wyndford by joining the towpath that runs alongside it. Its flat gradients give easy access along the entire length of the Canal.
