Kilsyth Local Studies : Resources available

Reference Library
We have a small collection of books on Kilsyth and the surrounding area. We also hold books on Scottish history, industrial history, transport history, family history, Stirlingshire history, sport and local religious history. All items in this collection are on open display on the shelves.
Kilsyth Map Collection (K1)
We have maps of the local area including 1:2500 Ordnance Survey 1st (1860s), 2nd (1890s), New (1910s) and some later editions of smaller scales. We also have some local estate maps. These items are kept in a map cabinet in the public area.
A printed list of the collection is available at the map cabinet. The list can also be searched electronically at the Library desk on the ground floor.
Kilsyth Local Collection – Booklets ,pamphlets, etc. (K2)
We have small printed books (too fragile for the library shelves), booklets and pamphlets. Home produced items such as notebooks, bound manuscripts and otherwise bound files are also available. All items in this collection are relevant to Kilsyth and the surrounding countryside or villages. Restricted access, available to view on request at the library desk.
A searchable database list and printed list for this collection will be available from Summer 2007.
Kilsyth Local Collection – Ephemera (K3)
A collection of leaflets, articles, reports, posters, newspaper cuttings, correspondence, circulars, and minutes all relevant to Kilsyth and the surrounding countryside or villages. Restricted access, available to view on request at the library desk.

Kilsyth Photographic Collection (U34, U100)
Three albums of photographic prints of old Kilsyth and surrounding district. All items in this collection are on open display on the shelves.

Microfilm Resources

Old Parochial Registers
Kilsyth Parish 1619 – 1854
Lists of births (baptisms), marriages and occasionally deaths recorded by Church of Scotland parish churches.
Census Returns
Kilsyth and surrounding areas 1841 – 1901
A complete listing of all the people living in the area, giving their age occupation, parish of birth and other information. Censuses were carried out every 10th year from 1841. This personal information remains secret for 100 years. The censuses are arranged geographically, street by street, not by people's names.
At present there are no finding aids (ie. street indexes) for use with of the Kilsyth censuses.
Local Newspapers
The following local newspaper is on microfilm at Kilsyth Local Studies:
Kilsyth Chronicle 1898 – 1960, 1986 – present
Note that there is a gap in the coverage. Bound original copies of the newspaper from 1961 - 1985 can be viewed at  North Lanarkshire Achives.
