Open Learning Services

Open Learning is a different way of learning that puts you in charge, and offers you the convenience to study when, and where you wish with no pressure whatsoever. Self learning packs can be borrowed in the same way as library books.

At Open Learning you'll find study packs on all kinds of subjects including language learning, basic arithmetic, reading, childcare, counselling, job seeking and creative writing. Open Learning study packs consist of specially written, easy to follow workbooks and often include cassettes or videos.

Take your first steps in learning how to use a computer at one of our Open Learning centres or outreach surgeries. Our staff will assist you as you progress from basic computing and keyboard skills to word processing, spreadsheets, databases and desktop publishing. You can gain a basic computing qualification which covers word processing, spreadsheets and databases. All computer learning is free of charge, and for a small charge you may use the computers for your own work such as typing up a CV.

Our specialist staff can provide a wide range of information on education opportunities including full and part-time college and university courses, distance learning courses and other open learning packages. Staff can also help you develop your study skills and offer advice and counselling throughout your learning.

All our Open Learning Centres have connections to the Internet, and offer short hands-on course. Learning packs on the Internet and computing in general can be borrowed and studied at home.

We run a programme of short courses which cover a wide range of subjects from computing for beginners to Desktop Publishing, study skills and personal development courses. Courses vary in length from one day to six weeks.
