Watersports at Strathclyde Park : Facilities & Services

Strathclyde Country Park, run by North Lanarkshire's Environmental Services, is an internationally renowned Watersports arena, having successfully held rowing championships at all levels including the 1986 Commonwealth Games and the 1996 World Championships. It also regularly hosts rowing, sailing and waterski events, jetski racing and even dragon boat regattas, where teams in giant canoes compete to the beat of a large drum.

Facilities

A purpose built Watersports Centre with excellent changing facilities and a vast 200 acre loch make this an ideal site for learning all sorts of watersports in a safe and enjoyable environment. With a large array of modern equipment for hire, backed up by warm and up to date lecture facilities, the Centre is at the forefront in the provision of watersports training in Scotland. You are also welcome to bring along your own craft, and make use of the excellent facilities, subject to your skills and the suitability of your equipment. Restrictions apply to certain powered craft and keel boats.

Training Courses

The Centre is approved to very strict safety standards by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, enabling us to run courses in Sailing, Canoeing and Windsurfing for young people in the 8 to 17 age group. It is also a Scottish Qualifications Authority Approved Centre and its experienced and highly qualified instructors can provide certification courses to National Governing Body standards to suit all levels of experience, or ambition. Courses are offered in sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, waterskiing, powerboating, and rowing, and a range of more advanced and specialised, classroom-based theory courses can be undertaken during winter evenings.

The instructors are also happy to organise and supervise team-building exercises that can be tailored to the exact needs of the companies or organisations concerned. These often also make use of the excellent conference and training rooms available in the Centre.

Safety

There is an element of risk inherent in all outdoor activities but here at Strathclyde Country Park we aim to reduce this to an absolute minimum by care and good practice. To help us achieve this aim we require practical course participants to be able to swim 25 metres in watersports clothing. Buoyancy aids are worn at all times afloat and there is always a rescue boat on patrol whenever there is anyone out on the water.

It is important that the instructor is made aware of any medical condition that could affect the participant during the course, especially taking into account the inclement weather that may be encountered. Participants must be prepared to follow instructions from a staff member regarding their own and the group's safety.

Conditions of Use

Click on Use of Loch and All Facilities for information on the conditions of use that must be adhered to.

Who can take part?

Under the Council's Equal Opportunities Policy we will attempt to secure everyone a place on a course, as long as they have the minimum capabilities required to take part safely. There is a minimum age limit of 8 years for junior courses, given the physical requirements of the activities concerned.

School groups, social work, community work, youth groups, private clubs, youth organisations etc. can all be catered for and activities can often be programmed to suit individual needs.
