Town Parks Initiative

North Lanarkshire Council's Town Parks Programme in 2002 led to the formation of established friends groups for the town parks included in the pilot project.

The town parks are:

  • Centenary and West End Parks, Airdrie
  • West End Park, Coatbridge
  • Cumbernauld House Park, Cumbernauld
  • Burngreen Park & Recreation Ground, Kilsyth
  • Duchess of Hamilton Park, Motherwell
  • Belhaven Park, Wishaw

Through a combination of hard work and perseverance by the friends groups, aided by council officers, there have been significant improvements to the parks.

These have included:

  • Improved lighting schemes
  • New play areas
  • Restoration to heritage items
  • Upgrading of path networks
  • Establishment of new landscaped areas
  • Improved maintenance
  • Encouraged greater bio-diversity
  • Regular events

The friends groups continue to identify further developments although these will only progress after community consultation has taken place.
