North Lanarkshire Council's Town Parks Programme in 2002 led to the formation of established friends groups for the town parks included in the pilot project.
The town parks are:
- Centenary and West End Parks, Airdrie
- West End Park, Coatbridge
- Cumbernauld House Park, Cumbernauld
- Burngreen Park & Recreation Ground, Kilsyth
- Duchess of Hamilton Park, Motherwell
- Belhaven Park, Wishaw
Through a combination of hard work and perseverance by the friends groups, aided by council officers, there have been significant improvements to the parks.
These have included:
- Improved lighting schemes
- New play areas
- Restoration to heritage items
- Upgrading of path networks
- Establishment of new landscaped areas
- Improved maintenance
- Encouraged greater bio-diversity
- Regular events
The friends groups continue to identify further developments although these will only progress after community consultation has taken place.
