Cumbernauld House Park is the largest town park in North Lanarkshire.
It's nineteen acres play host to ancient trees, wildlife, sites of historical interest and a network of trails and footpaths leading to Abronhill, Cumbernauld Village, Kildrum and also Cumbernauld Glen, run and maintained by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Cumbernauld House was built in 1731 by William Adam, on the site where Cumbernauld Castle stood until 1651 when destroyed by Cromwell's General, George Monck.
The park is home to a large selection of very old trees, some identified in the latest edition of 'Heritage Trees of Scotland' and rumoured to have been planted by Mary Queen of Scots.
More recently, a row of 18th Century estate worker's cottages at the edge of the park have been converted to house Cumbernauld Theatre. This is a busy arts centre with strong ties to the local community, and presents a wide ranging year round programme of events.
Cumbernauld House Park has an active 'Friends' group who seek to promote the environment and community life of Cumbernauld. They meet regularly and welcome new members. For more information, please use the link Friends of Cumbernauld House Park.
