1. Current status
A 1999 study found great crested newt present at 9 water bodies in North Lanarkshire, from a previously reported 13 sites. Three main locations at Gartcosh Industrial Park, Drumcavel Quarry and Croy Hill.
Legal protection
On the international red list of endangered species. Fully protected under UK and European legislation. North Lanarkshire appears to be a Scottish stronghold.
2. Current factors causing loss or decline

Loss of terrestrial habitat from development.

Loss or infilling of breeding ponds from farming operations, fish stocking, and housing.
3. Objectives and targets
Prevent further loss of confirmed sites, and secure with 10-year management plans. Re-introduction programme at 1 site per year for 10 years.
