Discovery Boxes are a free resource provided by North Lanarkshire Council's Museums & Heritage Service. Discovery Boxes contain original artefacts and images from the museum collections. They can be used for school projects, community displays and trips down memory lane by pensioners' clubs or heritage societies - indeed any occasion when the chance to handle and discuss objects or photographs would help stir the collective memory of the community or increase awareness of our local heritage.
There are seven boxes available, based around the following themes:
- Coalmining
- Bringing Up Baby
- Wartime Home Front 1
- Wartime Home Front 2
- Children in Wartime 1
- Children in Wartime 2
- "Make Up Own" Discovery Box
There is no charge to borrow a Discovery Box but to help keep track of loans, all borrowers must register with the Museums & Heritage Service. For organisations this will involve nominating a person who will be resonsible for the safe keeping of the box and its contents in addition to the actual borrower. For individuals, some form of recognised identification must be given, such as a utility bill.
To register phone or write to the Community Museum Officer at Motherwell Heritage Centre. Please refer to the "Contact Us" box that appears on the right-hand side of your screen.
