by Mary Bourne
Sandstone 1990
Cleland Library, Main Street, Cleland
"This is the first of a group of sculptures on the theme of landscape. It's main motif is a river running down between the hills, although I hope that the piece also has echoes of other organic forms, hands cupping, or perhaps unfurling leaves for example. These references are intended to express my feeling of the preciousness of the landscapes of Scotland."
"I carved the piece entirely by hand and in the gradual chiselling of the surface and grinding down with abrasives I felt that I was echoing the process of erosion of water on rock."
Parking for this artwork can be found to the rear of the library.
