The Top and Bottom of It

Kilmartin Slate

Newarthill Library, Kirkhill Road, Newarthill

"This piece is part of a group I made following a residency I undertook at a school near Culloden. The Top and the Bottom of It utilises the imagery of a clear space surrounded by the spear-like forms of the conifer trees now planted around Culloden Moor. In this sculpture however the image is widened to have more universal significance, with the circular 'moor' in the centre beginning to look like the sphere of the world and the spiky forms visible at the top and the bottom resembling the ice crystals of the two poles. In this way the piece became a comment on the arms-bounds nature of the world, particularly as it was during the frozen stalemate of the cold war.

Parking for this artwork can be found to the front of the library on Kirkhill Road.
