Jim Murray Memorial

by Alison Bell

Bronze 1996

Newmains Cross, Newmains

A community-led initiative, this life sized sculpture was commissioned to commemorate local boxer, Jim Murray, who died from injuries sustained whilst competing for the British Bantamweight Title in 1995. A tribute to the individual, the statue portrays a true likeness of Jim Murray in characteristic fighting stance, wearing the Scottish Bantamweight Championship belt.

Monies were raised for the costs of the commission through individual donations and community fund-raising events. Additional financial assistance was given through the Cultural Project Fund administered by the Department of Leisure Services, North Lanarkshire Council and by New Lanarkshire Limited, under the Supercounty Community Fund, towards landscaping costs.

Parking for this artwork can be found on the street in Manse Road.
