The immediate interpretation of the sculpture is that of a whale's fluke (or "tail"), but the piece, particularly through the use of welded and bolted steel plate, also suggests notions of military craft and weaponry. The aim of the sculpture is to contrast the whale – world symbol of peace and conservation – with the menacing ever present military threat.
