Airdrie Sentinel

Sentinel at Airdrie

Mixed Media 1996

Stirling Street Roundabout, Airdrie

For this commission the artist was asked too re-interpret the coat of arms for Airdrie. Using the town's Latin motto "Vigilantibus" ("ever watchful"), as a central motif, the artist combines images of the heraldic, double headed eagle and the cockerel, with archival images of the 1894 Coatbridge cricket team and local schoolgirls.

The artwork takes the form of a tripod supporting three enamelled panels. The images and blocks of colour were either silk screened or stencilled by hand on the panels.

"Airdrie Sentinel" is part of the Sentinel Art Project.

Parking for this artwork can be found at the side of Sir John Wilson Town Hall, Stirling Street.
