Redburn School and Nursery

Redburn School badge Redburn school caters for pupils who have a wide range of abilities and needs.  The staff work as a team to provide for these individual and often complex needs in an atmosphere that is relaxed and encouraging. Pupils are valued as individuals with emotional, physical and social, as well as educational needs.  Emphasis is placed on their interaction with their classmates and on their relationships within their families.

The school has 11 classrooms, a substantial pre-five provision, visual impairment support, a large PE hall, purpose built soft play area, sensory room, sensory garden, splash pool, large dining hall, home economics, art and music room, boardroom and movement therapy area.  The offices include administration, medical, physiotherapy and speech therapy provision.  There is a parents/visitors waiting area and external areas for pupils to play, some of which are fenced and have a soft play surface.  There is access to a football pitch and there is a staff resource room. Our concern for the whole child in the context of the school, the home and the community is reflected in the work of the school board and the parent/staff association who, over the last few years, have forged links with the Health Board and Social Work Department.

The pupils who attend Redburn school have a wide range of complex learning/physical difficulties which require staff to address the pupils' needs holistically.  The complexity is reflected in the high staff:pupil ratio within the school.  The aims of the school are:

  • curriculum - provide a broad and balanced curriculum promoting independence, advocacy and citizenship.
  • support for pupils - provide effective support systems for all pupils which promote personal and social development and underpin academic achievement.
  • professional development - improve the quality of educational experiences for pupils through a programme of continuing professional development of all staff.
  • partnership - foster a partnership with parents, carers and service providers to work together to meet the complex needs of the pupils of Redburn school.
  • learning for life - provide opportunities for each pupil to develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually in order to reach his or her full potential.
  • learning environment - provide a caring, safe, yet challenging environment which reflects respect for the individual.
  • values and citizenship - promote inclusion, social development, integration, equality and a sense of community.
  • social inclusion - maintain and extend links with the extended community of the school.

The school has strong community links with local businesses and groups.  Their support has enabled us to provide additional facilities for pupils, for example multisensory equipment and soft play equipment.  We hope to extend links with businesses in the community to obtain work experience for our pupils.  We aim to increase the awareness of the community and industry as to the strengths of our pupils.  Post 16 pupils have regular work placement within the Inland Revenue which has been a great success and we will seek further placements this year.  The innovative work experience and awareness raising of the world of work throughout the school has been recognised in national documents.  The school makes full use of all facilities in the community for both leisure and real life experiences.
