Portland high school opened for business on 18 August 1998 as a non-denominational, co-educational resource. It provides full-time day placement for up to 30 young people of secondary age and a small number of pupils who are still of primary school age. |
| The school offers day support to young people who need special educational provision. The school is located in Kildonan Street, Coatbridge and is within easy travelling distance for most pupils within the authority's boundaries. |

School roll for session 2005/2006 is 24.
Adjacent to the school is the Education Headquarters, Network Support and Resource Centre. The building itself comprises of a main office, staff room, head teacher's room, quiet room, nine classrooms and a dining/recreation area.
The school is staffed by 12 teaching and seven non teaching staff.
It is hoped that the pupils of the school can address their individual difficulties through the partnership of home, school, community.

The school ethos is one of the school being caring and supportive where the emphasis is put on independence, confidence and positive attitudes.
The school also participates in Out Of School Hours Learning one evening a week offering two half hour sessions, which run from 3pm to 4pm, of art, keyboarding, guitar playing, maths, multi-gym, English, model making and woodwork and The Duke Of Edinburgh's Awards Scheme which is open to pupils aged 14 years and above.
