Mavisbank School and Nursery

Mavisbank is a non-denominational , co-educational school which caters for children and young people between the ages of  2 and 18 years of age with complex additional support needs.  The school has a high level of expertise in making provision for children and young people who are blind or have an identified visual impairment.

The Mavisbank team includes teachers, instructors, early years workers, ASN assistants and medical staff.  We also have visiting physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and psychologists.

School Roll for 2007/2008 is 28.

Possible new entrants are arranged through the psychological service who will make an appointment with the head teacher.  Parents will be given a tour of the school giving an opportunity to see the school at work and speak to staff.  They can also attend a parents' coffee morning and talk to other parents.

The curriculum in Mavisbank is designed for pupils with complex needs.  We have a nursery curriculum and also follow guidelines on a new 3-18 Curriculum for Excellence.

In Mavisbank, we recognise that schools for pupils with multiple disabilities need an educational environment which includes at least as wide a range of approaches, activities and experiences as is required within a mainstream school.  The curricular areas in which our pupils increase their knowledge and understanding and develop skills to enhance their learning and personal development are:-

• Language and communication
• Understanding and relating to the environment
• Expressive arts and functional movement
• Personal and social development
• Religious and moral education

Within each constituent area there are skill components to be taught.  When these are identified for each pupil, they are incorporated in each pupil's Individualised Education Programme.  Against this background we develop a structured and balanced curriculum which is driven by the needs of the children and young people within our school which:

• acknowledges their right to common educational aims
• recognises and accepts the diversity of their abilities
• reflects, values and continues to seek experience of their progress at whatever level
• offers them access to, and preparation for an engaged lifestyle

The aim of the school is to provide a learning experience whereby all pupils will maximise their potential in a happy, caring and supportive environment.
