Bothwellpark High School

Bothwellpark High school badge Bothwellpark high is a co-educational, non-denominational secondary school, for pupils aged 11 years to 18 years, with a range of special educational needs.  Most pupils have a Record of Needs.  The normal leaving date is in June following a pupil's 18th birthday.  Bothwellpark high is located within the premises of Our Lady's high school.  Although the two schools have separate identities, there is a commitment to extend social and curricular links.

The main entrance is ramped to enable access for wheelchair users.  There is a lift on the ground floor to enable to access to other levels in Our Lady's high school.  The main entrance and internal stairs are specially marked to assist those with a visual impairment and special toilet facilities are available for those with a physical disability.  The home economics room has a hydraulically operated sink and cooker to accommodate those using a wheelchair. Clydeview School is the associated primary school although referrals may be made, through psychological services for pupils currently attending other primary SEN provision within North Lanarkshire.

Pupils work in groups of between six and eight pupils and classes are organised, as far as possible, to reflect gender distribution, age, social compatibility and level of disability.  The school's organisation reflects the time tabling of mainstream secondary with class teachers taking responsibility for the delivery of agreed subject areas.  The subjects offered includes:

The main aim of Bothwellpark high school is to promote personal and social development, where each pupil will recognise their individuality and uniqueness, function effectively as a member of a group, school and community, develop a positive self image, realise their potential and celebrate their achievements.

This aim is achieved through:

  • providing a model of age appropriate, relevant and quality school and community based curriculum which has a positive influence on national developments, with particular emphasis on proposed SQA developments in respect of a new provision at access one level.
  • promoting independence.
  • providing age appropriate teaching materials and resources.
  • reflecting and incorporating appropriate mainstream curriculum and trends into Bothwellpark.
  • addressing the ethos and principles of North Lanarkshire policies, with particular emphasis on equality of opportunity in relation to disability and incorporating, better behaviour, better learning, Health Promoting School and citizenship and partnership.
  • respecting the dignity of the pupils at all times, irrespective of the degree or level of disability/learning disability.
  • treating our pupils as young adults and reminding others, who may treat them as young children, that people with disability should be accorded the same degree of respect, dignity and treatment as everyone else of the same age.
  • our practice, which provides a model for others in society, so that myths are dispelled, perceptions and attitudes changed and patronage abolished.
  • the promotion of self-advocacy, where pupils will be afforded the support to become active participants in the decision-making process relating to their present  and future lifestyle.
