St Ambrose high school is a co-educational roman catholic school covering all stages from S1-S6.The school may be divided into two main areas, the main building and the extension. The main building accommodates the English, geography, mathematics, business education, religious education, science, home economics departments. There is also an assembly hall, two gymnasiums, library, the head teacher's office and the administrative offices. |
| The importance of the role which the school plays in the local community, and vice versa, was recognised when the school was awarded the Schools Curriculum Award in 1992 and again in 1999. Education business partnerships have encouraged an enhanced number of valuable links with local employers for curricular and work experience activities. |

The extension accommodates the music, history, modern studies, languages, art and design, computing and learning support departments. It also accommodates an oratory, one conference room, offices for guidance staff and administrative offices. The school has a games hall, two gyms and is also fortunate in being situated opposite Drumpellier Park with rugby and football pitches constantly available. Use is also made of Coatbridge indoor centre and in the summer months the Coatbridge outdoor centre is also used.
The school and its pupils are extremely fortunate to have so many members of staff who are prepared to take on additional work in supporting a wide range of activities which are vital in their contribution to the well being of the school and the enjoyment and development of the pupils. School outings related to the curriculum, for example geographical field trips, visits to theatres, industrial visits, historical site expeditions etc. take place regularly. School holidays, both in Britain and abroad, are regular events. The school has football teams at all stages and there is regular success in terms of winning trophies and individuals gaining representative honours. Netball, badminton, volleyball and swimming are also established and we are now able to add cricket to the list. Rugby has become very popular among boys and girls and the strong tradition in athletics, particularly in cross-country running, has been maintained.
The school regularly participates in debating and chess activities while the long tradition of school shows continues to gain strength ably assisted by the orchestra. The school is also very committed to assisting the local and wider community needs. There are regular collections for charity and every year major efforts are made, at appropriate times in the session, to raise money which benefits SCIAF and a number of other worthy causes. It is most encouraging to see the amount of staff-pupil co-operation that is generated by these extra curricular activities and the school looks forward to their continuation and expansion.
Throughout pupils' school careers parents are encouraged to keep in close contact with the school. Parents need not wait until the school contacts them regarding their child's progress. It is hoped that parents will feel at ease to get in touch with the school when they have concerns about their child's progress or welfare. The school encourages links with parents through a regular parental newsletter, pupil activities, pupil reports, parents' information and reporting meetings and a variety of other written and personal contacts.
Pupils from the primary schools listed below will normally enrol at St Ambrose high school when they reach statutory age for leaving primary school. Parents are informed well in advance of the leaving date and after the parents' wishes are taken into account, lists of children are sent to the secondary school. The associated primaries with St Ambrose are St Bartholomew's Primary, St Augustine's Primary, St Kevin's Primary, St Bridget's Primary and St Francis of Assisi Primary Ballieston. St Bridget's and St Francis of Assisi are both Glasgow schools. There is a meeting of parents and senior staff from St Ambrose in each of the associated primary schools in the period from October to February. Parents of new entrants to the school are normally invited to attend an open night in June. It has also been the practise of the school to arrange for primary pupils to visit the school during the day in June to familiarise themselves with the buildings and staff. It is also school policy that parents may visit guidance staff singly by making a telephone or written request.
