Our Lady's High Motherwell

Our Lady's High school badge Our Lady's high school, Motherwell is a six year catholic comprehensive and co-educational school serving Motherwell and part of Wishaw. Its current accommodation dates from 1974, but its records go back to 1875 and the birth of catholic secondary education in Lanarkshire. Our Lady's high is listed as having the largest roll ever recorded by a secondary school in Scotland, (2,325 in August 1977). Since that time, construction of other schools and population changes and zoning policies have resulted in a smaller  pupil intake.

The primary schools associated with Our Lady's high school are St. Bernadette's, St. Brendan's, Cathedral, shared with Taylor high school and St. Mathew's, shared with St. Aidan's high school.

The current roll of approximately 670 pupils is comfortably accommodated in the building, which has a capacity of 1,000 pupils. The landscaped grounds, playing fields and surrounding woodlands create a very pleasant environment.

Since Easter 1997, Our Lady’s has shared its accommodation with Bothwellpark high school. Bothwellpark currently caters for twenty five pupils with a wide range of special needs. Both schools actively promote physical, social and curricular integration.

The school curriculum for all year groups has been developed in line with national policies and is delivered within a thirty period week timetable structure. Pupils achieve certification in standard grade and in national qualifications including advanced higher. SQA vocational courses have been introduced in S3 and S4.

Extra-curricular activities include skiing, soccer, public speaking, music and charitable work, as well as a range of global citizenship activities.

There are currently fifty seven teaching staff and eight music instructors working in fourteen subject departments and faculties. Each department is linked to a member of the Senior Management Team.

The senior management team consists of the head teacher and four depute headteachers. In organising and monitoring the work of the school, the senior management team is supported, not only by other promoted and unpromoted staff, but also by a number of school committees. School self-evaluation, linked to detailed development plans, has helped identify immediate and longer-term priorities for the school.

The school has recently received national recognition for its work in promoting enterprise activity. It has recently achieved the charter mark and health promoting school standards and is currently applying for ecoschool status. The school has also recently undergone a very positive HMIe inspection.

The school works closely alongside other agencies to support its pupils. The school Joint Assessment Team and Pupil Support Base, for example, work with pupils who have difficulties coping with the school environment.

The Chaplain, Rev. Father Stephen Miller, is based in Our Lady’s two days each week. On both of those days he offers mass for pupils and staff in the school’s memorial chapel. He is assisted in his work by an active school chaplaincy team.

Support staff includes six administrative staff, three janitors, five technician staff, including an ICT technician, librarian, classroom assistants, partnership officers and a number of auxiliary and other specialist support staff.

The parent teacher association currently meets each month, as does the new parent council. Both groups work consistently to support the school in all its aims.  These aims can be summarised by saying that the school tries to achieve the full development of each individual and the school community as a whole, based upon the values of the gospel.

Further details of the school are available on the school website or by contacting the headteacher directly.
