Cumbernauld high school is a non-denominational, co-educational school. The school covers the stages of S1 to S6. Cumbernauld high school was the first comprehensive secondary school in the town, opening in 1964. Our catchment area now includes Carbrain, Kildrum, Seafar, the Village, Castlecary, Westerwood, Dullatur, Craigmarloch, Carrickstone Vale and Airdrie. |
| The main Robert Burns building houses most of the classroom subjects in its three tower blocks A, B and C. The James Watt building is for technology subjects, the Andrew Carnegie building houses are, business studies and the sciences, while the David Livingstone building has home economics. The assembly hall is spacious and there is a well equipped PE wing with a swimming pool, and extensive playing fields surround the school. |

There are many extra curricular events available to all pupils. Some are of a sporting nature and cover most of the basic sports eg football, rugby, skiing, basketball, volleyball, badminton. There are also a number of other activities such as chess, public speaking, theatre-going and excursions. Social dances and discos are also arranged and are very well supported. Charitable activities are well supported thanks to a major commitment by staff and pupils. Musical activities include the school show, concert band, brass group and wind ensemble, as well as the music club and guitar club. Opportunities exist for large numbers of pupils to learn to play flute, clarinet or brass instruments, as well as electronic keyboards and percussion, although at present a charge is levied for musical instruction in certain circumstances. Foreign trips and exchanges have always been an important feature of Cumbernauld high, and each year visits or exchanges are arranged to various European countries, mainly taking place during school holidays.
We have a system of pupil representatives for all year groups in the school. Pupils in each register class elect a representative to their year group council which meets regularly with the appropriate assistant head teacher. The opportunity is given to pupil representatives to become involved in discussing issues of concern, to participate in initiatives such as fundraising for charity, and to make an important contribution to the life of the school.
The importance of a smooth transition from primary to secondary is recognised and very close links have been established between the school and its associated primaries to facilitate this. There are frequent visits to primary schools by members of the teaching staff to make contact with the pupils and to consult with their teachers. Regular meetings are held between the primary head teachers and appropriate promoted staff from the high school. a comprehensive induction programme is organised throughout the session, starting with an open evening for prospective parents in November. This is followed by a meeting in February/March, when the head teacher and the appropriate assistant head give an illustrated talk about Cumbernauld high to primary seven pupils and their parents. In June, a final parents' evening is held in the high school, followed by a two-day induction visit to the school by the primary seven pupils. The four associated primary schools with Cumbernauld high school is Carbrain primary, Cumbernauld primary, Kildrum primary and Ravenswood primary.
